when ryan schreiber txted me hours before deerhunter @ apple store soho show asking me unexpectedly to shoot it (in almost all cases, i ask for the shows i shoot), of course, i had to say yes. i’ve seen them in more perfect scenarios, but no amount of crowd tameness (seated) or sterility of setting could keep the band’s textures and melodies from soaring and hitting heavy. as usual, bradford cox was his overly-gregarious self. every time i’ve hung around him he’s been the last one there, and that was no different tonight, where he engaged with fans fully, taking pictures, passing his guitar around and demonstrating how he achieves his sounds. i won’t soon forget the communal jam session post-A.T.P. last year that lasted through the morning, or earlier that same day when p.f.t.v. had a marathon video shoot with him and literally had to cut him after awhile from simply going and going. i sound like i’m glowing, but i’m just refracting his light.
